From Albury along the Murray River & then north to Mungo NP, Menindee Lakes & Broken Hill:

We were really busy enjoying life in the Victorian High Country & about to set off on our way to beautiful Beechworth when our friend Dan announced another Victorian COVID shut-down! Not wanting to be stuck in Victoria in the one spot ... we made the decision to hightail it back across the border into slightly safer and familiar NSW territory via Albury.

After having our Victorian travel plans foiled we jumped to 'Plan B' and headed off along the Murray River following the NSW border. The plan was to then swing north into the heat and red dust of Mungo NP, Menindee Lakes & on to Broken Hill - before making a run west across the border into South Australia.

We started our 'Plan B' trip along the Murray River with a stop at Corowa Whiskey & Chocolate Distilling Co. for a whiskey tasting session. Neither of us are generally whisky drinkers ... but we are flexible, it was a hot day, the dogs needed a break, it was there & we could! We actually left the distillery with lots of new knowledge about whiskey making & drinking + a tasty bottle of our favourite (after tasting them all - just to be sure & fair) and way too much chocolate of course!

Corowa is a nice, friendly little town right on the Murray River - complete with lovely parks, paddle boat steamer tours, lots of fishing spots and bike trails - perfect for a short relaxing stopover.

We headed further out along the Murray River to a spot just beyond Mulwala Lake to free camp for the night and pulled up in a very pretty area right on the edge of the river ... we ended the day with a swim in the cool muddy water, followed by wine and dinner over a camp fire and finished with some decadent Corowa chocolate for desert!

Note: Bandi and Dfor are really loving the nomadic lifestyle - so many new smells, so many people to say 'hi' too & the daily swims in the river are just magic for a Labrador!

Our next stop on the 'Plan B' detour was at Deniliquin as we turned north west to follow the Edward River. Deniliquin is a wonderful spot to spend some time - we started our visit with a stop at 'The Depot' vintage car museum, which is a very impressive museum owned by one very dedicated collector - truly amazing!

We also spent some time on our first day in Deniliquin checking out the visitor Information Centre, gallery, historic museum & cafe - which were excellent.

We camped up on the edge of the Edward River in a free camp reserve provided by the Deniliquin Council.

On our 2nd day in Deniliquin we set out early on the e-bikes to ride along the river & wetland bike trail which runs around & though town. Deniliquine is a lovely little town, very tourist friendly and lots to do both in town and along the river.

Later that day we set off following the Edward River and pulled up at the end of a hot day at Balrenald Caravan Park - which is a really nice spot with a nice cold inground pool (which we spent some quality time soaking in). The next day we parked the caravan and left the dogs in air conditioned comfort in the van, while we drove 150klm north to see the brilliant & fascinating Mungo National Park.

  • We have written up a seperate post on Mungo Mational Park as we had lots of photos & info to share on the area - so just a couple of snaps here.

From Balranald we travelled on to the township of Wentworth and visited the Old Wentworth Jail, which was really interesting - before checking out the local Historical Museum and then the local Military Museum. Wentworth was a very interesting stop off on our journey to Menindee Lakes and Broken Hill - if you are ever passing through this way.

  • (Menindee Lakes and Broken Hill have been truly amazing - but we will need to add photos & info in seperate posts).

A questionable sounding Goalhouse grog recipe known as 'The Knocker' ... if you are interested?
